AI’s Energy Footprint

An icon set showing a dark blue globe with land masses in teal and burnt orange. To the left is a megaphone with sound waves coming out of it. Above and to the left of the globe is a circular logo with 17 different colored sections, representing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. To the right of the globe is a silver laptop with a teal screen.

Each year, Digital Moment’s Digital2030 program introduces a new Challenge aligned with specific Sustainable Development Goals, inviting youth to reflect critically on actions for a more sustainable future while exploring ethical ways to use technology.

The 2025 Challenge invites YOUTH (13-22) to consider how we can design and train sustainable Artificial Intelligence (AI) models.

This year, we’ll be focusing on:

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 13: Climate Action
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

AI has incredible potential for progress, but it also has a significant environmental footprint. It’s up to us to rethink how we use AI and learn how to build it responsibly.
